Homemade White bread

Even though ‘Rice’ is our staple, majority of Sri Lankans often opt for bread as a cost effective and hassle free meal solution, even if it means 3 times a day! So we might as well bake it at home when its as convenient as just 6 core ingredients.

Here goes..

INGREDIENTS (For 2 mini loaves šŸžšŸž)

  • 500g Flour
  • Ā 2 tsp sugar
  • Ā 1 tsp salt
  • Ā 7g yeast
  • 2 tbs Margarine
  • 350ml Water (Lukewarm water preferred/ mix a little fresh milk for better taste)
  • Egg (to brush on top)

METHOD

FIRST- WASH HANDS (Lots of kneading in the process) and pre heat oven at approx. 200 Celsius

STEP 1- Knead all ingredients accordingly and rest dough for 30min till it rises… (NOTE- water to be poured GRADUALLYĀ  while mixing..) if you feel your dough is consistent, STOP pouring water, you might not need all 350ml)

STEP 2- Knead again for 10 mins or so.

STEP 3- Place dough in a bread tin (or silicone pan).

STEP 4- Brush top with egg

STEP 5- Bake in a preheated oven (250 degrees) till golden brown.

*Baking time- Approx. 30 Mins

Tipsā˜šŸ»

  1. Kneading is KEY (If you havenā€™t kneaded bread dough before, watch a YouTube vid on how itā€™s done because trust me, itā€™s all in the KNEAD! Your texture will depend on this!)
  2. Recommending to use rectangular bread tin to achieve the loaf shape.

This was my very first attempt too hence itā€™s a tad out of shape and all ..šŸ˜ but donā€™t stress if you donā€™t get it right the first time. Takes practice. Enjoy!
